Terrorist Attack in Calcutta - by - B. Raman
by B. Raman |
Armed terrorists riding on two motor-cycles are reported to have opened fire with Kalshnikov rifles on the security personnel guarding the building of the American Centre in Calcutta on the morning of January 22, 2002, killing five policemen of the Calcutta Police and injuring some others, including some members of the staff of a private company employed by the American Centre for internal security purposes.
It has been reported that unverified claims of responsibility for the attack have been made in telephone calls made on behalf of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-al Islami and Al Razza Commando. Further details are not yet available.
At the time of recording this purely tentative assessment ( 2 PM IST), the following comments are possible:To this writer's recollection and knowledge, no terrorist organisation connected with Pakistan's proxy war in Jammu & Kashmir had in the past used this modus operandi (MO) of opening fire from a motor-cycle. However, the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), the Sunni extremist organisation, which was banned by Gen.Pervez Musharraf on January 15, 2002, and its armed wing called the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LEJ), which was banned by him on August 14, 2001, had frequently used this MO for killing Shias and attacking Shia religious places in Pakistani Punjab and Sindh.
